Quotes
There are five quotes per act that we thought were significant. To the right of each quote is a sentence explaining how the quote is significant.
Act I
1. "A pair of star-cross'd lovers take their life," -Chorus
2. "Which, but their children's end, nought could remove," -Chorus 3. "I do but keep the peace. Put up thy sword, or manage to part these men with me." -Benvolio 4. "The all-seeing sun ne'er saw her match since first the world begun." -Romeo says about Rosaline 5. "Some consequence yet hanging in the stars..... by some vile forfeit of untimely death," -Romeo has a premonition about his future |
1. This quote foreshadows from the very beginning of the play that two lovers will fatefully take their own lives.
2. Earlier the Chorus says that two lovers are going to take their own lives, so this quote foreshadows that the main conflict will be resolved with the deaths of the lovers. 3. This shows that Benvolio is going to be the peace maker and negotiator throughout the play. He is an important peaceful and neutral character. 4. This is significant because it shows Romeo makes quick decisions because later that night he changes his mind and Juliet is the sun and the most beautiful. It also shows he is overly dramatic and emotional. 5. This quote shows the audience that Romeo is one of the star-crossed lovers and foreshadows that he is going to die. It also hints he will meet his soul mate at the party he is going to go to at the Capulet home in the next scene. |
Act II
1. "Then plainly know my heart's dear love is set
on the fair daughter of rich Capulet; As mine on hers, or hers is set on mine, And all combin'd, save what thou must combine By holy marriage." -Romeo 2. "It is the East, and Juliet is the sun!" -Romeo 3. "So smile the heaven upon this holy act That after hours with sorrow chide us not!" -Friar Lawrence 4. "Come, come with me, and we will make short work; For, by your leaves, you shall not stay alone Till Holy Church incorporate two in one." -Friar Lawrence 5. "O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo? Deny thy father and refuse thy name; Or if thou wilt not, be sworn my love, And I'll no longer be a Capulet." -Juliet |
1. This shows that Romeo is very serious about his love for Juliet. He has rash decision making skills, as he wants Friar to marry him to Juliet after only meeting her last night and since she loves him as well, he is even more eager.
2. Juliet is now the center of Romeo's world and everything he knows, everything revolves around her. She is a bright beacon of hope. 3. Friar Lawrence's line is extremely ironic because of what happens later in the story because the marriage does not work at all in their favor and actually does bring them all great sorrow. 4. This quote foreshadows to the scene when Romeo and Juliet both commit suicide to be with their lover, when one dies the other dies because there are united as one. 5. Juliet's famous line from the "balcony scene" is perhaps the most well known and iconic quotes from the whole play. She is expressing her dismay after she has found out her love from the party is actually her supposed enemy, Romeo. This shows how she would ignore the family's deep hatred and go so far to say that she would no longer be a member of her family if she could be with him. |
Act III
1. "O Romeo, Romeo, brave Mercutio is dead!" -Benvolio
2. "Sir Paris, I will make a desperate tender of my child's love." -Capulet 3. "O, I am fortunes fool!" -Romeo 4. "Hang thee, young baggage! Disobedient wretch!" -Capulet 5. "If all else fail, myself have the power to die." -Juliet |
1. This quote is important because Mercutio dies and it causes Romeo to be sad and vengeful, which later causes him to be banished.
2. This quote is important because he is promising Paris that Juliet will marry him....but she is already married. 3. This quote is important because it is foreshadowing that luck is almost never in Romeo's favor. This also shows that maybe it was fate that caused Romeo to kill Tybalt. 4. This quote is important because her father is going to kick her out of the house if she doesn't marry Paris, which causes more conflict. 5. This quote is important because it foreshadows what will happen to both of the lovers and it shows how dedicated to Romeo she is. |
Act IV
1. “Do thou but call my resolution wise and with this knife I’ll help it presently” - Juliet
2. “No warmth, no breath, shall testify thou livest; The roses in thy lips and cheeks shall fade To wanny ashes, they eyes’ windows fall.” - Friar 3. “How if, when I am laid into the tomb, I wake before the time that Romeo come to redeem me?” - Juliet 4. “O me, O me! My child, my only life! Revive, look up, or I will die with thee!” - Lady Capulet 5. “Death is my son-in-law, Death is my heir; My daughter he hath wedded. I will die And leave him all. Life, living, all is Death’s” - Capulet |
1. This sentence shows the extremes that Juliet will go to so that she does not have to marry Paris.
2. Juliet is given a drug that will make her sleep for 42 hours and appear dead to others, leading them to think this is the solution to not marry Paris. 3. Juliet’s fears is foreshadowing to later when Romeo does not make it in time to see her wake up. 4. The true significance of what Juliet is to her mother is shown in this sentence because she believes her daughter is dead and is in despair. 5. The day before Capulet was ready to disown Juliet from the family because she did not want to marry Paris, but once he sees her "dead" he regrets all of his harsh words. |
Act V
1. "I dreamt my lady came and found me dead,"- Romeo
2. "Your looks are pale and wild and do import some misadventure."- Balthasar after he tells Romeo that Juliet is dead 3. "Beauty's ensign yet is crimson in thy lips and in thy cheeks, and death's pale flag is not advanced there." -Romeo to Juliet while she sleeps in the Capulet's tomb 4. "Poison, I see, hath been his timeless end. O churl! Drunk all, and left no friendly drop to help me after?"- Juliet 5. "Capulet, Montague, see what a scourge is laid upon your hate, that heaven finds means to kill your joys with love." -Prince to the two families |
1. Foreshadowing! Later in this act Juliet actually wakes and finds him dead.
2. This is foreshadowing that Romeo is going to do something rash that he will regret later, but because he is impulsive he will do it anyway. 3. Juliet's red lips and cheeks are signs that she is alive, but Romeo is too sad and wrapped up in his own feelings to notice. 4. This quote shows that Juliet is planning on killing herself too, just so she can be with Romeo, because she loves him so much. 5. This quote pretty much explains the whole play. These family hate each other so much that their loved ones were destined to die because of love. |
